Beginner's advice

When choosing a martial art there are a number of things to be done in order to make the right choice. The first thing to do is to do some research into the different arts to see what they offer. It may be that you want a grappling style or a close quarter style of art. It could be that you want to learn a kicking art, the choices are endless!!

Once the choice(s) is made, check for classes available in your area or within reasonable travelling distance. It is a common thing to call the instructor to say you are coming to their class, but this is not necessary, most will allow you to just turn up and join in.

Most clubs offer a free trial period, this could be for one class or a couple. Of course, you can always watch the class and observe how the students are with their skill and also how the instructor communicates with his/her students.

The instructor should not be afraid to discuss their background in the martial arts and should show qualifications if asked. Don't be scared to ask about students insurance and also, the instructor, should be insured and have a Criminal Records Bureau certificate.

Once satisfied, you, as the beginner, should be able to join in and become part of the clubs 'family'. Training should be fun, increase fitness and confidence......

Above all, you must be patient, learning martial arts takes a long time and can take a lifetime to master the martial art styles.

ENJOY THE JOURNEY!!!!
