Thailand trip 07
This year, after much talking and delays, the trip to Thailand was finally booked. As usual, I took everything including the kitchen sink with me! We started off from East Dulwich on the 26th of March. Travelling with me were three of my students; Steve Huthwaite, Tim Chivers and Micheal Gordon.
We all looked forward to a lovely fortnight soaking up the delights of Thailand and the intense training ahead. This was to be the lads’ first experience of training in the tropics. I can honestly say they did very well out there. We arrived at Heathrow Airport safely driven there by one of Tim’s friends, thanks mate! Checked our luggage in ok and made our way to the plane. I was a little worried about the weight of my suitcase, but it was not a problem.
The flights from Heathrow to Bangkok and then from Bangkok to Phuket ran very smoothly, all in all it took us around 14 hours to arrive at the camp. The taxi journey from Phuket Airport was considerably long, Phuket afterall is only an island, right? Yes, but, it happens to be the biggest of the Thai islands. The Airport was the other side of the island to where the camp was.
When we arrived at Rawai Muay Thai Camp it was about 2 o’clock in the afternoon. The place looked deserted, this was because the morning session had finished and the afternoon session didn’t start until 4pm. There was a student there doing shadow boxing and he went to get some assistance.
That is when we met Noi, she is the wife of one of the trainers (Finn) at the camp. She took us to our bungalows and informed us that training started at 4pm so we’d see the trainers then. The guys were tired from traveling and so opted out of training that session and preferred to wait until the morning when fully refreshed and ready to go. I, on the other hand, decided to give that afternoon a go, I’m not sure if it was the best thing to do after traveling so far!! It was quite knackering, I was introduced to Tuk, who was the head trainer and then had a pad session with another instructor called Bung.
